Jornal Vascular Brasileiro: 5 years of success

Airton Delduque Frankini

President, SBACV

The main means that support a scientific society are based on the existence of members, performance of events, and publications. SBACV, which was initially called Sociedade Brasileira de Angiologia (SBAng) and was created in 1952, launched its first scientific journal in 1965 — Revista Brasileira Cardiovascular, whose editors were also those responsible for the creation of our society: Dr. Mário Degni and Dr. Rubens Carlos Mayall. For 15 years, Revista Brasileira Cardiovascular was the official journal of SBAng and it gathered the few Brazilian publications of our specialties in that period.

With the technical and scientific evolution of Vascular Surgery and Angiology, some events were created in Brazil, especially in the 1980's, in which the Encontro Paulista de Cirurgia Vascular stands out. It was a landmark in our specialty, since it brought several innovations, among which the Papers presented in Round Tables, which were interesting because they were sometimes presented by little known colleagues who had good experience in some area of our specialties. These studies provoked interesting and rich debates from a scientific perspective, since they were presented to a large audience and were generally attended by foreign guests who participated in the discussion. The possibility of publishing such works was noted, but at that time we did not have a specific journal in our area, since the old journal was having an irregular publication. In addition, there were master's theses and doctorate's dissertations in graduate programs that needed to be published. Those were the ingredients that originated a new journal, in March 1985, called Cirurgia Vascular & Angiologia, edited by Antonio Carlos Simi, Adib S. Bouabci and Bonno van Bellen. Although it had been originally a private journal, it aimed at disseminating the scientific activities held by Regional São Paulo of Sociedade Brasileira de Angiologia. From 1991 on, it also started publishing material from Regional Rio Grande do Sul. With a new issue at every three months, it lasted until December 2001 as the only national journal exclusively focused on Angiology and Vascular Surgery.

As our Sociedade became more modern, larger and more mature, we started to feel the need for a journal owned by SBACV. After all, we were in the 21st century and were approaching the 50th anniversary of SBACV. This was a true challenge which the President at that time, Dr. Márcio Leal de Meirelles, decided to face, assigning the responsibility for the creation of the journal to his Publications Director, Dr. Telmo Bonamigo. His choice could not have been better. Dr. Bonamigo, who has always believed in this project, totally dedicated himself to the creation of a journal that could on the one hand represent SBACV and on the other hand gather publications so as to meet the scientific standards of the time we lived in. That was not an easy task, but thanks to Dr. Bonamigo's dedication and competence and the trust that his work inspired in Dr. Meirelles and other SBACV members, Jornal Vascular Brasileiro was launched in June 2002. And it was a bold publication, followed by an electronic version and, at every six months, by a compilation of articles in English, the Brazilian Vascular Journal. In a short time, Jornal Vascular Brasileiro has become known, reliable and self-sustainable for the Sociedade. Also in a short time, thanks to the work carried out by the editor, editorial board, reviewers and authors who believed in the journal, it was indexed: a little more than three years after the journal was launched, it was accepted in the SciELO database. As a consequence, some adjustments have been necessary, such as suspension of the English version (as a separate publication) in order to avoid duplicate citation, as properly explained in a previous editorial (J Vasc Bras. 2006;5(3):165-6); however, the electronic version in both languages can be accessed through the SBACV web site, through journal web site (www.jvascbr.com.br) or through the SciELO web site, simultaneously with the printed version.

The regularity of a new issue every three months, the number of articles from different publication categories, among other demands, have allowed Jornal Vascular Brasileiro to be currently indexed in six international organizations that provide more visibility to our scientific production. Currently, the main goal of the Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Winston B. Yoshida, although he knows it is a hard goal to achieve, is to be indexed in MEDLINE. However, being aware of the strength of the journal's editors, the importance it represents to our Sociedade, in addition to the reliability achieved in such a short time, confirmed by the inclusion in different indexing databases, and especially due to the potential of SBACV members, I am absolutely sure that this goal will also be achieved in a shorter time than usual.

While we wait for this moment, I would like to remark our gratefulness to everyone who was directly or indirectly involved in this project. I would also like to invite all the members of our Sociedade to celebrate its 50th anniversary and to prepare articles for submission to the genuine SBACV journal — Jornal Vascular Brasileiro.
