Toward full indexation

Marcio Meirelles

Ex-President, SBACV

Jornal Vascular Brasileiro was created in 2002, the year in which Sociedade Brasileira de Angiologia e de Cirurgia Vascular (SBACV) completed half a century of existence. And that fact was not a coincidence.

The Sociedade was born in the mid-20th century due to the efforts made by a reduced number of altruistic specialists. Although in constant growth, it preserved a nearly family-model for many years. It worked in its partners' houses, and that was where its files and stationary material were stored. Therefore, it is natural that, at that moment, the Sociedade could not cover the expenses of running a journal and that, in order to promote its scientific production, it made use of publications maintained by some of its dedicated members. However, when it celebrated its 50th anniversary, the situation had changed. SBACV had significantly grown, had around 2,000 members, presented an intensive and diversed scientific activity, and the editorial spaces that, due to the generosity of some members, it had occupied up to that moment, no longer satisfied the realities of that time.

It was then decided that SBACV should take the risks of having its own journal. And it should be a quality journal, able to, in due time, deserve indexation by demanding institutions. It bet on competence, enthusiasm and participation of its members to produce articles. And on the journal's value to obtain its sponsorship. A fund was soon allocated to assure independence and periodicity to the journal, especially in its first issues.

The results achieved by Jornal Vascular Brasileiro over these first five years have certainly exceeded the expectations of almost eveyone who initially fought for it. But there are still large challenges to be overcome. We must double our efforts to maintain the number and quality of the scientific production offered to publication at a high level. It is also indispensable that the members of the Editorial Board are increasingly more participating in performing their relevant tasks. And that our members, above all those that work in research centers, medical schools and universities, are well alert so that the current academic scoring norms do not compromise their essential participation in this effort made by the Sociedade journal toward excellence.

Over these five initial years, we have already obtained extremely important victories, such as indexations by SciELO and Embase. We are now working to be indexed by MEDLINE. This new goal will finally assure Jornal Vascular Brasileiro the level of editorial impact compatible with the relevance that Brazilian Angiology and Vascular Surgery already have in the scientific context of nations.
