THE QUESTION OF THE “COMMON”, THE OTHERNESS IN THE “COMMON”

ABSTRACT

The question of the “common” has earned prominence in capitalism’s current stage, marked by the regression of the welfare state, privatization of services essential to life, and aggravation of income concentration and social inequalities around the world, in tandem with the exponential increase in the production of goods and wealth. We will address the question of the “common” based on two current views on the subject, those of the pairs Negri/Hardt and Dardot/Laval, particularly regarding the latter pair’s critique of the former. But we will open the discussion with Robert Zemeckis’ film “Cast Away”, starred by Tom Hanks, with which we will introduce the material and immaterial dimensions of the “common”. We will highlight, about the film, the importance of others in our lives and the question of otherness, which we will discuss through the thoughts of Winnicott and Merleau-Ponty. Finally, we try to unite the two perspectives developed in the article, i.e., that of our relationships with others and that of the “common”.
