The point of this paper is simple: how to consider the first city that appears in Book 2 of Plato’s Republic, which Socrates calls the "true city" (alethine polis)? I aim at showing that we must take it seriously. In the presentation of the first city there is a reference to the mythical tradition of the "Golden Age", but Plato refers to it so as make a counterpoint to the "true city". In addition I point out some possible consequences of that interpretation.
