ABSTRACT
The main interpretation of Levinas's work affirms that it is a philosophy of the Responsibility for the Other and that in this Ethical Responsibility occurs the subjectivation of the subject as a rupture with Being. In this sense, the aim of this article is to show that there is a selfish responsibility implied in the young Levinas, thus affirming the possibility of thinking about the ground where Ethical Responsibility is possible. In other words, the importance of the materiality within the philosophical project of the escape or the radical departure of Being that Levinas will develop throughout his work is rescued.
