What do they say about Brazil in jokes?

Abstract

Considering that humorous texts are forms of serving less official speeches and often operate with stereotypes, this article proposes to deal with jokes of/about Brazil in order to verify not only how the country is stereotyped in this type of production, but also to what extent the story may or may not explain such statements, as they take up more or less solid cultural schemes. The discussion is anchored in the stereotype concept formulated in the social sciences and adopted by French line of discourse analysts (AMOSSY; HERSCHBERG-PIERROT, 2001; POSSENTI, 2010b). The analysis corpus consists of jokes published in virtual environments. The study highlights some recurrent sociocultural aspects of Brazil that the stereotype usually in negatively way, and confirms the humorous representations in their forms and procedures. It is forged in the historical and social fabric of life flows.
