MARIA MARTA FURLANETTO AND THE CHRONOTOPIA: A STEP BEYOND BAKHTIN

Abstract

In this article, I explore the notion of chronotopia as presented by Maria Marta Furlanetto (2019) in Chronotopia: A Broad-Spectrum Phenomenon. While Bakhtin limited his analysis of the phenomenon to novelistic literature, Furlanetto proposes extending it to other fields based on what she describes as figurations that arise from present historical and social markers. Consequently, I demonstrate the significance of her contribution to the study of chronotopia as a foundational element in various cultural processes. In my doctoral thesis on the discursive process in the jury courtroom (Cruz, 2023), for instance, Furlanetto’s conception of chronotopia was crucial for examining how the enunciative perspectives of speakers tend to highlight the interplay of spatiotemporal features that inspire and sustain them.
