Abstract
This article investigates how the genre category is approached in dissertations and theses in the area of Linguistics. The study is mainly based on socio-rhetorical (Bazerman, 2015; Bhatia, 1993; Miller, 2009; Swales, 1990), dialogic theory (Bakhtin, 2003; Bakhtin; Volochinov, 2009) and textual studies (Marcuschi, 2008; 2010). This is quantitative-qualitative research, based on documentary analysis of a corpus consisting of abstracts and introductions of Linguistics theses and dissertations defended at the Federal University of Alagoas, Brazil, between 1991 and 2017. The analysis indicates that the works investigated focus on genres diverse, in different discursive spheres, focusing on the description of the genre and its pedagogical application; which are predominantly affiliated with textual studies or applied linguistics; and that Bakhtin and Marcuschi are two theoretical consensuses in the analyzes undertaken.
