Contemporary narratives in the media: a critical analysis of the slow movement discourse

This research project carries out a critical investigation of the slow movement discourse that is present in the press and electronic media, while drawing on the theoretical principles of Critical Discourse Analysis, which is primarily concerned with the role of language and discourse in processes of social change. To this end, an archive of texts from different symbolic registers was compiled (blogs, advertisements, books, texts published in the press and posted online) with a view to investigating the social values underlying this discourse, as well as the conditions of possibility for its emergence. The analysis focuses on interdiscursive relations in the archive, identified on the basis of an investigation of lexical relations in its texts. The results suggest that the archive features: a) a critical discourse on the new social media; and b) a critical discourse of the culture of performance and productivity. The slow movement discourse articulated in these texts is produced from different perspectives and has distinct values and social meanings.
