Abstract
Grounded in the theoretical premises of Pêcheux’s French branch of Discourse Analysis, this paper aims at theorizing over the subjective movements regarding the subject’s process of identification in the midst of their first and foreign languages. The subject is, therefore, assumed as constituted by a double and simultaneous process of identification, one being of an ideological nature and another thought the subject’s inscription in a language. From this standpoint, this paper concentrates on the latter process and presents how the subject’s encounter with other ways of saying/speaking creates movements within the signification network. For this purpose, this analysis of an idiomatic expression is determined to demonstrate that the historicity of the first and foreign languages is not identical, which can trigger a subjective reconfiguration as the subject is inscribed in another linguistic materiality.
