VARIATIONS AND CATEGORIES IN THE CONCEPT OF HEGEMONY IN ERNESTO LACLAU

Abstract:

This study explores the central importance of hegemony in the work of Ernesto Laclau, highlighting its conceptual transformations over time. Laclau adopts an interdisciplinary approach, engaging with various theoretical currents such as Marxism, post-structuralism, and psychoanalysis, and providing a comprehensive and complex understanding of hegemony. Throughout his work, the author shows the significance of shifts in approach, such as when he replaces the emphasis on antagonism with the concept of displacement and integrates the notion of deconstruction as fundamental to understanding hegemony. It is argued that the conception of hegemony has experienced different moments, such as fundamental class, antagonism, displacement, and deconstruction, in a process marked by an enriching dialogue with influential thinkers such as Antonio Gramsci, Louis Althusser, Jacques Lacan, Slavoj Žižek, Jacques Derrida, and Michel Foucault.
