The political challenge of sustainable development

The seeming unanimity in favour of sustainable development stands in contrast to the absence of meaningful political initiatives in order to change the economic, social and political intitutions linked to the ongoing style of development In particular there is a patent contradiction between the hegemonic antistatist discourse and the requirements for sustainable development, including a state with even more regulatory and planning powers than the interventionist state of the past.
