Between Goethe and Habermas: bildung and the public sphere

In the contrast between the German tradition of emphasis on Bildung understood as individual self-formation and the contemporary conceptions of Habermas, for whom the individual is no longer the source of meaning, the author finds the standpoint for submiting Habermas' work to a critical analysis. Along the analysis the relevance of classics like Freud and Weber to this debate is examined.
