Abstract:
This article aims to study the satirical elements in two chronicles from the "Gazeta de Holanda" series, by Machado de Assis, published in Gazeta de Notícias . Both texts dealt with slavery. Thus, the social content is also analysed in its relationship with the versified composition of the two texts. In the first, the writer dealt with a crime that shocked Rio de Janeiro´s society in 1886; in the other, he gave voice to a slave, who revealed the harsh hardships of living under the condition of status-liber.
