Abstract
The aim of this article is to indicate the editorial conditions and selection criteria for attributing authorship to works by Machado de Assis. , to Machado. The reasons are biographical, stylistic and comparative. If the justifications for the editing criteria are correct, this would be Machado's very first contribution to the journal. The author returns to and develops theories in his earlier published articles, especially “O jornal e o livro” [“The Journal and the Book”] and “A reforma pelo jornal” [“The Reformation by the Journal”].
