Whenever the relationship between Machado de Assis and Eça de Queirós is considered, it is usual to refer to the polemics revolving around O primo Basílio's reception in Brazil. However, many other aspects might be taken into consideration when one proposes to reflect about possible dialogues between the two major authors of the Portuguese language literatures. It is our goal to discuss how the presence of the clergy and and religious references are treated, mainly in two novels by these writers: Dom Casmurro and A relíquia.
