Abstract
Considered the "first master" of Machado de Assis, the Portuguese poet Francisco Gonçalves Braga (1836-1860) is an illustrious unknown in Brazilian and Portuguese literatures. Thus, the article shows aspects of Gonçalves Braga's literary life, especially during the six years he lived in Rio de Janeiro.
