Abstract:
This article seeks to investigate the notions of race, humanity, motherhood and social class inserted in the process of figuration of de characters in the short story "Father against mother" originally published in Relíquias de casa velha , 1906, by Machado de Assis. This critical reading aims to raise issues that further strengthen the relationships between literary and historiographic fields. Based on the debate of ideas of authors such as Lélia Gonzalez, Frantz Fanon, Roberto Schwarz and Sidney Chalhoub, an analysis of intersectionality in the readings of characters is proposed. In this way, the correlation of Arminda's figuration can be seen with the many enslaved black women who suffered from the violence of whiteness.
