In Lima Barreto's debut novel,Recordações do escrivão Isaías Caminha, we observe aesthetic resources linked to the modernization of perception that distend the shape of the novel from the frame of the nineteenth century. The problematization of these strategies and their consequences for the novel constitutes the purpose of this article.
