Abstract
Based on considerations of the status of translation and authorship in the early 1860s in Rio, this article analyzes the comedy Hoje avental, amanhã luva (Apron Today, Gloves Tomorrow), Machado de Assis' version of Chasse au Lion (Lion Hunting) by Gustave Vattier and Émile Najac. Machado’s adaptation reveals founding elements of Machado de Assis' work, especially the characterization of female characters.
