VERSES IN MACHADO DE ASSIS’S COMPLETE POETRY

Abstract

This paper surveys the verses employed by Machado de Assis in his four published poetry books. When Machado grouped his first three books of poetry, Crisálidas (1864), Falenas (1870) and Americanas (1875), with his fourth book, Ocidentais, in his Poesias completas (1901), the poet removed several poems from the first three books. This paper compares the verses that were kept in Poesias completas with those cut out of the collection. A comparative approach is also taken in studying the verses used in the four books in their definitive forms. The objective of this analysis is to show the prominent verses in each book over the course of the poet’s career.
