Abstract
This study analyzes the critical review by Roberto Schwarz of Machado de Assis's chronicle "entitled" "O punhal de Martinha" ("Martinhas'dagger").In light of this review, this study introduces the contradiction inherent in Schwarz’s method of connecting literary forms and social processes. Moreover, this paper seeks to establish the social dimension of Machado's narrative by considering the relationship between real and imagined facts in the chronicles in Machado’s column, "A Semana" [The Week].
