On the boundaries of public and private space: some notes about representation (and subversion) of gender roles in the feuilleton Helena (1876), by Machado de Assis

Abstract

In this article we suggest a rereading of Helena (1876), by Machado de Assis, as a feuilleton on the pages of the newspaper O Globo, which was the support of the novel’s original version. Regarding the intersection of the press and literature, we intend to reveal the possibilities of a reception with an emphasis on gender and understood according to its time. Thus, taking into account Helena’s actions, we will analyze the specificity of a policy whose execution is based on the private space – emphasized by the feminine – that was, however, still preponderant in the public space, which was seen as a masculine environment. Ultimately, by combining class and gender, we intend to provide new nuances to the possibilities of actions created by women in the XIX century.
