"O bom povo português": usos e costumes d´aquém e d´além-mar

This article takes as its starting point the Portuguese institutional context throughout the period of the Estado Novo and the works of Mendes Corrêa and Jorge Dias, and seeks to question the relationships between the anthropological production in Portugal, the empire and the nation. My purpose is to outline an "anthropology of the nation" and an "anthropology of the empire" taking as our starting point the realisation that, in the Portuguese case, "nation" and "empire" correspond to political and ideological structures which, throughout the authoritarian period, are confused with one another and, at times, translate into each other.
