MEMORIES OF THE FLOOD OF 1974 AND THE PRODUCTION OF SPACE IN TUBARÃO (SC)

ABSTRACT

The flood of 1974 displaced 60,000 of the 70,000 inhabitants and caused the deaths of dozens of people of the municipality of Tubarão (SC). The city has kept the memory of the flood through several initiatives, which have intensified in the early 21st century. From the perspective that disaster investigations should take into account not only their contingency, but also post-catastrophe studies, a document research about the politics of memory of the flood of 1974 was carried out. The research aim at understanding these actions as politics of memory and investigating their relation with the social production of urban space through analysis of the monuments in the city and the adoption of other measures, such as the institution of the day of remembrance of the catastrophe. The research demonstrates that these monuments and references to the flood present close relation to moments and political personages of the city, and concludes that these policies are key elements for the construction of the urban history and identity and legitimation of new political actions.
