The author perfomed a histological study of the anterior region of the human hypothalamus staining with chrome hematoxylin and silver carbonate in order to compare the results obtained by both methods. The two stains produced similar results. However, it was found that the silver carbonate impregnation should not be used exclusively, but should always be checked with chrome hematoxylin. The second part of this paper deals with the degeneration of the terminal portions of the nerve fibers of the supra-optical-hypophyseal tract, with formation of the socalled "Herring bodies". The neurons are thought to function as a type of neuroglandular cell, whose production of secretions coincides with the dissolution of the cells's apical pole.
