Alguns aspectos fisionômicos da vegetação do Brasil

The authors had the opportunity of visiting all Brazilian national parks and some of the States reserves in order to suggest a revision of the country's policy on that field. During their trip, that covered nearly 30.000 km, they profited to make observations on the phytophysiognomy and took photographs of the more interesting types of vegetation.Main types of vegetation - NORTHEAST - 1. Caatinga (thornbush): according to ecological conditions and human intervention, there are variations of the basic type as follows: a) caatinga arbórea (arboreal caatinga): along and above the rivers floods limits; b) Caatinga aberta (open caatinga): on rocky grounds and slopes of quartzit; c) Caatinga arbustiva densa (thick shrub caatinga): on the open valleys of larger rivers. Possible result of previous human intervention through agriculture on the arboreal caatinga, which is unable to regenerate itself. 2. Floresta (forest): found in particular situations as near the littoral and resulting from sea humidity, or on top of isolated granitic mountains subject to higher degrees of condensation. Rather similar to the forests covering the slopes of Serra do Mar (southeast). 3. Agreste (bush savanna); found between the forest and the caatinga. It's a sort of savanna landscape, resulting from human intervention on the arboreal caatinga. In the State of Piauí this designation is given to portions of cerrado. 4. Cerrado (wooded savanna): Occurring on sandy ground as in Sete Cidades National Park and in Araripe National Forest. The species differ from those of the cerrados of the Center-west, mainly with respect to their heights, but the landscape somehow is similar to that of Mato Grosso and Goiás. EAST - The southermost part of Bahia and north Espírito Santo werecovered by evergreen forests near the coast and semi-deciduous forests more island , rich in precious hardwoods. These forests have been severely cut in the State of Espírito Santo and are in course of devastation...
