We have reviewed the literature on specific immunoprotection against tegumentary leshmainias. Papers dealing with human beings as well as with experimental animals have been included. The review is divided into there main topics: 1) Studies attempting protection by using virulent parasites of the same strain; 2) The use of parasites, virulent or not, for preventing other strains of Leishmania; and 3) The use of "attenuated" parasites, or parasite products, for inducing protection against the infection.
