FACTORY OF MONSTERS: THE MATTER OF ‘SELF-CARE’

Abstract

This paper investigates elements that contribute to education of critical thinking associated to the process of subjection to idealized body models. Discourses in ten videos from the YouTube channel called Fábrica de Monstros (Factory of Monsters) were transcribed. The data collected underwent content analysis. A complex move is made that entails considering involvement of mainstream media, social media and channels such as the one that is the object of this research, among other variables, as well as of Physical Education that, under the influence of medicine, feeds social imaginary related to physical-objective measures constructed as ideal. Then individuals are induced to invest energy in their physical appearance even at the expense of broader self-care, linked to the distinct elements that constitute them as individuals. Data analyzed unveil the heteronomy of docile bodies.
