“THE MIND IS STILL THAT OF A FAT PERSON”: SELF-MANAGEMENT DILEMMAS OF PEOPLE WHO UNDERWENT BARIATRIC SURGERY

Abstract

We analyzed some conflicts involved in the experiences of people who underwent bariatric surgery after failed attempts at controlling their weight. We used a qualitative method and conducted participant observation together with semi-structured interviews. The data gathered reveal life histories full of anguish when facing a body that gets out of control and becomes a threat. Feelings such as guilt and shame express acknowledgment of failure in their self-management processes. Post-surgery reports suggest remaining self-rationalization processes being constantly threatened by fatness, which reflects mainly on their fear of regaining weight. Still on that period, some subjects expressed trouble to manage their new bodies according to medical directions while others described their dilemma for not recognizing themselves in their new appearance.
