THE ROLE OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHERS DURING THE EARLY YEARS AT FULL-TIME STATE SCHOOLS IN SÃO PAULO

Abstract

This study identifies and discusses the role of Physical Education teachers who work in the early years of elementary school at full time state schools in São Paulo. It is a qualitative documentary study including Thematic Analysis (BARDIN, 2011). The study found that Physical Education teachers, in addition to their specific duties, play a more interdisciplinary role regarding Art. They are also responsible for monitoring students at exit and lunch times and participating in assemblies and so-called ‘difficulty groups’. To complement their workload, they also have to provide teaching assistance. The study finds that official documents determine that these professionals play a disciplinary, a recreational, and an assistant role with multiple functions according to the field’s own history.
