YOUNG PEOPLE’S PERCEPTION ABOUT THEIR IDENTITY PROCESSES AND THEIR APPROPRIATIONS - BEYOND FOOTBALL PLAYER NEYMAR

Abstract

This article examines and interprets the relationship between young people’s identity construction and perceptions about their forms of appropriation regarding the figure of Brazilian football player Neymar. This study is qualitative and based on the interpretative paradigm. It included focus group interviews, observations and a field diary to analyze the speeches of 29 individuals enrolled in secondary education at a private school in Novo Hamburgo, RS, Brazil. Each student was included in one of three groups corresponding to their sociocultural practice (Theater, Student Council and Athletics). Their appropriations are pervaded by implicit will to consume in order to enjoy social approval and respect as a way of belonging in that space. In this context, Neymar is not a reference and students say they are not influenced by him.
