ABSTRACT
In this paper, based on the fieldwork done in Maceió (AL) and São Luís (MA), we reflect upon what became known as the “expansion of national factions.” We argue the emic notions of “family” and “faction” present in the constitutions and resolutions of conflicts experienced by our interlocutors in their territories are indispensable for comprehending of the protection, drug and gun markets in both cities.
