Crack Market and Production of Space in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro

ABSTRACT

This article describes, using the results of an ethnography carried out between 2009 and 2016 in spaces of crack consumption and trade in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, different territorial conformations of regions stigmatized as “cracolândias” (crack lands). Observing the criminal markets of each city, empirical axes are exposed in order to propose correlations between the retail dynamics and the production of consumption territories.
