Malogro da fortuna: Política de crédito, hipotecas e Caixas Econômicas na década de 1930

Abstract:

The Great Depression of the 1930s led the Brazilian government to modify the legislation of the financial system, for instance the law of usury and economic readjustment. The changes in legislation helped Brazil prevent a deepening of the Great Depression domestically, but did not allow the recovery of credit. Changes in credit in the mortgage market and the share of public banks, especially with Caixas Econômicas were observed. This institution significantly expanded its operations both in attracting deposits and loans. There was a countercyclical policy in the financial market, predominantly in public institutions, such as mortgage policies from Caixas Econômicas.
