THE INFLUENCE OF INSTITUTIONS IN THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS OF INTERORGANIZATIONAL TRUST

Abstract

This study aims to understand the influence of institutions on interorganizational trust building process, considering the periods: prior to building trust (T-1); when the trust is being built (T); when confidence exists and new interactions occur (T+1). Used in this research the concept of trust based institutions. From this perspective, trust is understood as a form of individual or collective action that is constitutively immersed in the institutional environment in which a relationship is laid, based on favorable assumptions about future behavior in the trust (Bachmann; Inkpen, 2011BACHMANN, R.; INKPEN, A. C. Understanding institutional-based trust building processes in inter-organizational relationships. Organization Studies, v. 32, n. 2, p. 281-301, 2011.). The sample consisted of 28 furniture companies Arapongas-PR and Linhares-ES, owners, managers and/or guardians were interviewed by business partners. The results show that institutional standards operate differently in the analyzed periods. If the potential partner can identify and submit to industry practices, start a relationship with greater ease. The study on the trust building process contributed to the understanding of the reasons that lead companies to trust or not trust their trading partners.
