ORGANIZATIONS KILL: A REFLECTION ABOUT CORPORATE CRIMES

Abstract

The aim of this study is to incorporate the post-colonial perspective to understand the dynamics of corporate crime. To do so, we analyze a crime committed by a corporate transnational corporation in Brazil, whose consequences were, among others, the death of workers and residents. We adopted a qualitative approach to conduct research and carry out a documentary research to gather official documents on the analyzed cases and journalistic files, which allowed the identification of people to carry out narrative interviews. We do an approximation of the constructivist grounded theory approach, analyzing the empirical material from the integrated category: “Producing death in corporations”, which was supported by three characterizing codes: (a) the corporation’s maneuvers; (b) the weapons used; (c) the power, consent and resistance. As main results, we develop the concepts of necrocorporation and corporate crimes against life, pointing to the need for change in thinking about the relationships between governments, corporations and society.
