The impact of interdependence at work on the effectivity of teamwork

Work teams are increasingly common in a large number of organizations given the advantages they can offer to organizational efficacy. One of the central characteristics of work teams is dependence among their members. There are two types of interdependence: the first is related to tasks that the team members execute, the second is related to rewards they receive. Results of empirical studies show that the two types of interdependence influence the teams’ effectiveness in different ways. The objective of the present study is to analyze the effects of both types of interdependence on the satisfaction and commitment of team members. To achieve this data of 333 employees of an organization were analyzed. The results show that the predictive model developed explained 15% of the satisfaction and 14% of the commitment of team members. The present study also shows that each predictor showed different effects. The practical implications of the study refer to the fact that managers need to consider the different effects of each type of interdependence on the satisfaction and commitment of the team members.
