Many parties in one: the configuration of the field of Recife's carnival

Carnival is one of the most emblematic parties of Brazilian cultural identity. In Pernambuco the party held in Recife is marked by a multiplicity of rhythms in public spaces and the coexistence of traditional and new cultural manifestations. Drawing on the theory of fields of Pierre Bourdieu, we discuss the configuration of the field of the Multicultural Carnival of Recife. We use secondary data analysis composed of the information provided by the organization of the event and primary data collected through non participant observations in the celebration of Carnival 2012. We understand the different spaces of the party, the poles of the carnival, as representative of nine different positions within the field in question. Each pole is related to a specific class of revelers who each have a particular profile.
