This article presents an assessment of studies accomplished in Brazil focusing the theme decision process in organizations, a thematic area of Administration, through the analysis of published papers in the period 1993-2002. The papers were assessed using the following elements: approached subjects, epistemologic position, strategies and research methodologies and analysis of the quality. In the analyzed period 53 papers were identified, 28 of which with empiric application and 25 of theoretical stamp. It was verified that the studies analyzed are still highly based on prescriptive theories and strongly concerned with the application of theories. The assessment emphasized the validation of the studies and of the research instruments, the analysis of the data and the presentation of the results. These characteristics should contribute to the debate about the identity and quality of the research in Administration, specially in the thematic area of decision process in organizations.
