Reading and school performance in portuguese and mathematics in elementary school

This study aimed to explore the relation between reading comprehension and schooling performance in portuguese and mathematics in primary education at public schools. The sample was composed by 434 students enrolled in 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades. The traditional Cloze test was collectively administered. Students' Portuguese and Mathematics grades were obtained in their school records. Results evidenced associations between reading comprehension and schooling performance. Students who presented better reading comprehension scores were those who presented satisfactory performance in both subjects. Data are discussed considering positive implications reading comprehension can have on learning several academic contents.
