The History of Psychology in the Institutionalization of the Council System

Abstract:

Writing about the institutionalization of the Council System first necessitates the characterization of how psychology and the psychologist profession emerged in Brazil. Without claiming to have exhausted the history of psychology in the country, we have gone back to the beginning of the 20th century, supporting and guiding the content to better understand its events since the most fertile period of development and action took place from the 1950s up to the passing of the law that regulated the profession. Next, to understand the movements that took place and the directions that followed them, the events considered fundamental to the creation and regulation of the Federal Council and the Regional Councils of Psychology were discussed, contextualizing them with the Brazilian political moment and the social demands of the time since they were decisive for the bias in the relevant legal regulations and instruments. The undeniable awareness that new demands are emerging from the profession and society has called for alternative courses of action that, without infringing on current legislation, respond to the desire for democratization of the Psychology Councils System. Finally, we describe some of these actions that currently belong to the practice and functioning of the Psychology Councils System and show that the category has the reception of its interests and those of society in its class body.
