Project transforming the traffic and the facilitator's perspective

Traffic accidents are a public health problem in Brazil, and mainly concern youngsters. Traffic safety education offers tools to diminish this problem, but it is necessary to improve the traditional methods of risk communication. The project Transforming the Traffic is an intervention of the Traffic Psychology Lab of the Federal University of Paraná, Brazil. Based on activities named drive your life, innovates in education methods using experiential tools to promote a discussion about traffic risk perception to youngsters. The metaphor group dynamics gives an affective experience in the group development process through the survival game, that promotes a discussion about traffic using metaphors. The group facilitator is the core of these activities because he/she stimulates the discussion and the reflections about traffic. This study analyses the abilities of the group facilitator through the fundamentals of the project proposals: the theoretical bases of the group development, the structure of facilitation on the “survival game”, the orientation about the discussion of traffic and other central themes, and the procedures to end the activities. This study gives technical and theoretical support to an education program to facilitators.
