Family Planning and Parenting: the Traditional, the Change and the New Challenges

Abstract:

This study presents the results of a qualitative research, which aimed to comprehend the role and participation of women and men in family planning from the point of view of women. The study understands family planning as an action of responsible parenthood. 15 women assisted in Family Health Strategy (FHS) units composed the study. In order to accomplish the intended goals, semi-structured interviews were conducted and subsequently analysed using the thematic content analysis. As a result, we found that the participants consider women as the main responsible for contraception, since they are in charge of children's care, and because men are seen as less involved in this matter. Nonetheless, in opposition to this perspective, the study participants reported participative attitudes of her partners in the tasks of care and family planning, as well as an involvement in the use of contraceptives, as this aspect is considered of mutual interest. Finally, the importance of family planning actions in FHS units, as determined by the legislation, is highlighted. The inclusion of men within this context is understood as a great challenge to be constructed by professionals who work in the field.
