Social Media and Emotional Symptoms in Students at a Private University

Abstract:

This explanatory study aimed to understand the role of symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress in relation to the type of active and passive use of Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The sample was stratified and randomized, In total, 381 college students participated in the study, of which 72% were women with a mean age of 23.9 years. The instruments used were: sociodemographic and social media use data questionnaire and DASS-21. The linear regression model found positive associations between depression symptoms and passive use of Facebook; anxiety symptoms and passive and active use of Facebook and Twitter; and stress symptoms and passive and active use of Twitter and Instagram and passive use of Facebook. It is concluded that at least one emotional symptom is positively related to the variation in each type of use of the three social media controlled by the intensity of use.
