Professional Practices to Support Sexual Assault Victims: a Review of National Literature

Abstract

This study aimed to describe professional practices to support sexual violence victims implemented in different contexts, such as Tutelary Council, the Specialized Referral Center for Social Assistance (CREAS), and hospitals, investigating the characteristics of these professionals, the work context, and the activities developed. To this end, a narrative literature review was conducted in the SciELO, PePSIC, IndexPsi, LILACS, BVS-Psi, and Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD) databases from January to March 2019. Two categories emerged from the analysis: personal and occupational characteristics of the professionals and characteristics of the work developed by them. Professionals were predominantly female and of different age, especially within hospitals context. The work context and developed activities evinced the unpreparedness of these services in meeting the needs of sexual assault victims, the precarious working conditions, lack of adequate technical support to work with VS cases, and the insufficiency of the support network before the exhaustive work. This study advances knowledge in the research field and provides information for interventions aimed at professionals working with sexual violence - crucial for the development of public policies aimed to coping with sexual violence.
