The Psychosocial Report of Violence against the Indigenous Brazilian People: The Case of the Krenak Correctional Facility

Abstract:

The political violence against different indigenous populations during the Brazilian dictatorship is still very unknown and little publicized. The well-known case of the Krenak Correctional Facility is a milestone in the process of overcoming this invisibility. The present article is a presentation and analysis of the psychological technical input carried out to ascertain the psychosocial effects of the political violence against the Krenak population in this episode. It was an integral part of the action of the Public Ministry from Minas Gerais, which requires that the Brazilian State recognize the extreme violations of the collective rights of these indigenous people and also the adoption of actions of historical amends. Built within indigenous land from 1969 to 1973, the Krenak Correctional Facility was a detention center intended exclusively to indigenous people who did not abide by the law. Based on the collection of interviews, field observations and bibliographical research, a report that highlighted the impacts of the political violence in individual levels as well as in collective levels in the Krenak population was carried out. Findings that suggest that there is an ongoing process of violence against the Krenak demand not only the examination of these effects but also the possibility of psychosocial collective amendments for this population.
