The Pathways to Recognizing Psychological Assessment as a Science and Profession

Abstract:

This study aims to shed light on the challenges psychological assessment faced during the 50-year history of the Brazilian Federal Council of Psychology (CFP). In this context, it addressed the creation and consolidation of the psychological test evaluation system (Satepsi) by first reviewing the issues directly involving the Psychology Councils System. Then, it shared contemporary challenges, emphasizing the primacy of legal security to protect Satepsi. This study explored the actions of the Advisory Committee on Psychological Assessment in defense of human rights and social justice in psychological assessment, reflecting the CFP history of struggle and commitment to ethical principles and respect for diversity. This study also discussed contemporary challenges, including the need for greater representativeness in samples in validity and standardization studies and the promotion of more equitable practices. Finally, it stresses the ongoing importance of developing research strategies and practices that promote equity and accessibility in psychological assessment, ensuring that all individuals are respectfully and fairly assessed.
