Concepts of psychological assessment: knowledge of students and professionals

Psychological assessment has been receiving a lot of attention in the last years, despite several issues related to the inadequate professional performance in the area as well as issues regarding the formation, are pointed out in the literature. For this, the present paper aimed at investigating the student´s and professional´s domain on some essential concepts of the psychological assessment. A sample composed by 40 graduated professionals and 40 graduation students answered a questionnaire containing six open questions that investigated themes such as the definition of psychological assessment, the methods that can be used during that process, the system of evaluation of psychological tests (SATEPSI), the minimal requirements for the approval of an instrument, definition of validity and precision. The results confirmed the concerns found in the literature by pointing that, in a surprisingly way, there are no substantial differences between the two groups focused on the domain of the investigated aspects, as well as no more significant knowledge on these concepts by the professionals. Many mistaken answers were found, as well as the lack of responses and others that represented the ignorance about what was being asked. The results showed the necessity of a greater care with the formation process and constant updating of the professionals that work in this area.
