Psychologists and the Use of Media: a Research Report

Abstract

Understanding media as a mediation tool that contributes to the process of constituting subjectivities, and thus as a field that deserves attention on the part of Psychology, this research aims to understand how psychologists relate to the media, both as a source of information and as a working tool. Data were collected by means of a survey conducted with registered psychologists in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, and analyzed in the light of descriptive statistics and thematic content analysis. The results indicate that media is a topic rarely discussed during professional qualification, besides highlighting the centrality of the internet as a means for obtaining information - with cell phones being the most accessed device for this purpose. A total of 65% of participants reported using social networks for the exchange and sharing of professional information. These findings point to the importance of thinking about new modes of interaction with the media, as well as to the transformation scope already operated by it, thus raising important ethical issues that deserve attention within the field Psychology. Before the scarcity of discussions about the media/psychology interface, this research seeks to contribute to this debate and its practical developments.
